Top of the World…Highway that is….

It’s a little chilly but the overnight rain has stopped and it looks like it’s gonna hold off for the rest of the day.

The Top of the World Highway is a 127-kilometre (79 mi) long highway, beginning at a junction with the Taylor Highway near Jack Wade, Alaska traveling east to the end the ferry terminal in West Dawson, on the western banks of the Yukon River. The highway has been in existence since at least 1955 and is only open during the summer months. The entire portion of the highway in Yukon is also known as Yukon Highway 9 and the Alaska portion is referred to it as Top of the World Highway.

The highway gets it’s name because along much of its length, it skirts the crest of the hills, giving looks down on the valleys. It is also one of the most northerly highways in the world at those latitudes. Two nearby, farther north highways are the Dempster and the Dalton Highways. It is not particularly safe in winter, even for snowmobile use, due to the lack of trees for shelter.

The Top of North America!!

Spent the night in Fairbanks and next morning the ride to deadhorse (Prudhoe Bay) began….

If you ever watched “Ice Road Truckers” on TV, this is one of the roads that they travel over. The James W. Dalton Highway, usually referred to as the Dalton Highway (and signed as Alaska Route 11) is a 414-mile road in Alaska. It begins at the Elliott Highway, north of Fairbanks, and ends at Deadhorse near the Arctic Ocean and the Prudhoe Bay oil fields. Once called the North Slope Haul Road, it was built as a supply road to support the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System in 1974.The main purpose of this highway was for the construction of the Trans Alaska Pipeline and supply the oil fields in Prudhoe Bay.

Starting from Fairbanks, one way trip to Deadhorse is about 500 miles and I plan to ride it in two days with one stop in Coldfoot which is about the half way mark. I total I will spend four days roundtrip back to Fairbanks with two nights in Coldfoot (1 night way up, 1 night way down) and one night in Deadhorse. The road itself is about 30% paved and 70% gravel/dirt (and mud when it rains) and at times can be quite hazardous for small vehicles and motorcycles….I guess that’s part of the appeal, as well as the fact that it is the farthest north you can drive in North America…

Away I go!!!! The adventure begins….

I left Vancouver a few days ago and decided to head north through the Fraser Canyon towards Prince George. The sun was out, it was warm and not too much traffic… a perfect way to start a road trip!!

It was about 8hrs to PG and I just sat back and got used to long riding days again. Left the next morning and decided to head towards the southern part of Alaska and a little town called Hyder.  Hyder has a population of approx. 70 and is land locked by BC (same as Point Roberts), the only way to get to Hyder  (other than by boat) is through Stewart, BC which is located right on the Canadian side of the border with a population of about 300…Needless to say, these are both very small towns but the ride in offers some spectacular scenery and some close up shots of the Bear glacier.

After I finished my cross Canada road trip, I planned to start an Alaskan road trip right after I returned to Vancouver and because of this, I decided to fly back from Moncton, NB and have my bike shipped back by truck, this allowed me to get home, take care of errands and prepare for Alaska while my bike was being transported back to Vancouver…perfect!!! or so I thought…

Have you heard of the Cabot Trail? Day 21….

Well I didn’t…until I got to Nova Scotia cause every biker that I talked to asked if I was going to do the Cabot Trail?? So guess what? I’m gonna do the Cabot Trail today….The ferry arrived in North Sydney at 7:30 am and away I went!!!

The Cabot Trail is a highway and scenic roadway in the province of Nova Scotia. It is located in northern Victoria County and Inverness County on Cape Breton Island. The route measures about 300 km and completes a loop around the northern tip of the island, passing along and through the scenic Cape Breton Highlands.

The famous Cabot Trail….. I think it’s best to go counter clockwise….

I had heard from different people that the ride could take 4 hrs and as long as 8 hrs….hmmm that’s a pretty big window…I guess it all depends on traffic and how many stops are made…anyhow, I actually finished the ride in about 4 hrs (traffic was almost non existant) so I decided to continue on to Halifax and get there early….

Back on the ferry again…..Day 20

My goal was to go coast to coast in Canada and I’ve done it!! Now it’s time to turn around and head home….the ride out to the east coast had taken longer than I had expected but I did get to visit parts of Canada that I will probably never see again….and I’m still not finished…Today I do a short ride (2 hrs) to Argentia (southwest of St. Johns) where I will catch the 15 hr ferry back to North Sydney…on my way to Newfoundland, I just passed through Nova Scotia without stopping, this time I’m gonna take take a few days and visit a few places….
