Everest Trek Day 2…..

Apparently, because this whole trek is so popular, there are “Tea Houses” along the whole route. You can pretty much find anything you need as the locals are there to oblige…for a price…from what I understand, everything gets pricer the further along you get, which does make sense as everything that is brought in is done by Sherpa or mule….a lot of work….The Tea Houses are very Spartan, but it saves the need to camp and you can get a nice hot meal and in western terms, very inexpensive…

Day 2 begins on the trail.....

We hit the road, err’ I mean trail, about 8am…weather looked ok and not too cold (maybe 7 degrees at the time). The trail was pretty much like before, some ups, some downs and generally not too bad…until I found out that in the last 2.5 hrs we had to gain about 300 meters in elevation ( about 1100 feet) …picture the Grouse Grind for 2.5 hrs…it was brutal!!! The only thing that kept me going was the fact that Uzol had guided an 85 year old lady last year and she had made it!! I kinda call BS, but that’s what he said….so I continued on, slowly with lots of breaks, we finally made it to Namche Bazzar, I could barely walk after that climb……This place is the village of all villages and serves as a major junction for all kinds of treks and expeditions, pretty much anything you need, you can find it here, coffee shops, mountain gear stores, bakeries, pizza places, sports bars….anything you could want…the elevation is about 3400 meters (over 11000 feet) and this is where we would stay for two nights to acclimatize.

This is why Uzol did not recommend eting the meat....it's all carried up by sherpa and is not fresh....

My attemp at being a photographer....if you want a copy, gimme a shout...hahahaha

And this is where hell begins....2.5, maybe even 3 hours of this....and there is more to come!!!

Everest Trek Begins!!!! Day 1

The day has finally come, my guide Uzol, (not how you spell it but this will do) and I depart the hotel early in the morning to catch a flight to Lukla which is where the actual trekking begins. Its only about a 30 minute flight but it takes you right into the Himalayans…according to Uzol, the Lukla airport is one of the most dangerous in the world and he still gets a little nervous when flies into it, he says “check it out on YouTube”….Great, thanks for telling me…as my guide, shouldn’t he be telling how great this trip is gonna be and how exciting it is? Not “we may crash on this flight”….actually it didn’t really bother me and when we landed, I realized why this place was so dangerous…because the airport is in the mountains, the runway is very short and it is built on and angle, (not sure how many degrees, but it looks pretty steep) so when u come in for landing, the pilot has to land uphill!! (I’m not a pilot, but I’m guessing that’s not the safest way to do it)…anyhow, by reading this blog, you know we made it safe and sound (although a little bumpy along the way).

Airport check in counter...pretty basic, but it works...

Here's our ride...about what I expected...

Kinda gives you the size of the plane...almost shoulder to shoulder, reminds me of the flight from Vancouver to Guangzho

You can't really tell from the pic but the runway is severely sloping up!!!

At the airport, we meet up with our porter “Boo”….he’s probably about 5’2” and about 110 lbs from one of the nearby villages…my bag wasn’t that big so I didn’t feel too guilty, as I found out later, he was a fast little bugger!! We had some breakfast and we were off, we would hike about 2.5 hrs to our first spot to spend the night…the trail wasn’t too bad, kinda like a walking path in Stanley Park except a little bit rougher…as we went along, I thought to myself “this isn’t so bad”, “I can go all day like this”….little did I know what was ahead for Day 2……

Here we go!!! the trekking begins

One of the many suspension bridges we will be crossing...

After about 2.5 hrs, this is our first stop....home sweet home!!

It's pretty basic but it beats the heck out of camping!!!

Touring Kathmandu… April 5

I had almost forgotten how crazy and chaotic driving in these Asian countries can be….as part of my Everest package. They threw in a city tour of Kathmandu with a private driver which I did today. Donny (the driver) came by in the morning and we were off to the first stop, Boudhanath Stupa, which as it sounds, is a bhudist temple and fairly close by….that is when you don’t factor in the traffic…the traffic in Kathmandu is nuts!! Everyone fighting for whatever inches they can get, motorcycles squeezing in any and wherever they can and roads with pot holes the size of Grand canyon makes for one heck of a combination….It amazes me that a city that is one tenth the size of Bangkok seems to have twice as much smog… Anyhow, back to Boudhanath Stupa, there was some sort festival going on but with donny’s broken English/Nepalese, that’s about all I could make out ( I just did the smile and nod thing as he explained everything)…all I know is that there were a lot of people throwin rice and rubbing a lot (the statues that is)….I did learn one thing though, always walk around the shrines clockwise… 30 minutes later we were off to Guari Ghat, which you may have guessed, is another temple….of the Hindu variety. Pictures Another 30 minutes there and then back in the car to the next stop….you guessed right again!!Another temple…don’t get me wrong, I respect peoples beliefs and I understand that these temples are very important to them, but temple after temple after temple gets a little old…so as Donny made our way to the next stop, I told him to just drop me off and I would make my own way back to the hotel…he seemed ok with that as he got the rest of the day off and I gave him a decent sized tip for his troubles…

View from the driver's seat...these guys drive about 3' from each other, lots of horns and no signals....scary!!

Temple at Boudhanath Supa....everyone is walking around the dome "rubbing" it...throwin some rice as well

I have a lot more pics, but the internet sucks here and I can’t stand waiting….

23 hrs Later…..April 3-4

I wasn’t looking forward to the flight…left YVR at 12:30pm and after one stopover in Guangzhou, arrived in Kathmandu at 10:30pm the next day…and to make matters worse, the plane was fully booked on the Vancouver\Guangzhou leg (13hrs) and I was constantly battling this tiny elderly Chinese lady for the arm rest….she put up a dam good fight!!! One saving grace about this whole flight thing was that I had read online about how bad China Southern was and that Guangzhou airport was a sh*t show…well, the both of them weren’t that bad…China Southern was no different than any other discount airline, if you have flown Allegiant Air, it’s the same, except no one speaks english….Guangzhou Airport was great!! Smooth sailing through the whole transit routine…just goes to show that not everything on the net is true… ;-)

I ‘ve had a full day in Kathmandu now just trying to get my bearings….I’m staying in the Thamel area which are which basically caters to tourists and backpackers and kinda reminds me of Thailand with the narrow dirt roads lined with vendors selling their wares shouting out the standard “c’mon in, it’s free to look!!”…I must say though they are not quite as aggressive as the Mexicans….

Main Street Thamel....gotta watch your toes from all the motorcycles zipping in and out...

Backpacking store all over the place...if your looking for climbing gear, you can find it here for cheap!!! Although I can not vouch for the quality...It's all branded but they are all made in China or Nepal.

hmmmmm.....which one doesn't belong????

Why do they need a shower in a teen dance club???

The requisite wild dog hanging around the streets....there's several hundred of his buddies kicking around too

As for the food section of this blog…..Because of Nepal’s geographical location between India, Tibet and China there is a whole mix of cuisines readily available  and arrarently it’s supposed to be pretty authentic!!! Having said this, everything is available from pizza, hamburgers, pasta, steaks, you name it…..one thing I haven’t seen so far though are fast food chains !!! no McDonald’s, Pizza hut or KFC anywhere…..as you would expect, food is pretty cheap here, so eventually I want to get to try everything…..

Tibetan Momos (just like pot stickers with a spicy meat filling) and chicken and flat noodle soup...it all tasted ok, but was a little bland for my liking, had to spice it up with a little hot sauce!!

One last thing….I also booked a trek to go to Everest Base Camp (EBC) today, it was a little more than I expected, but it will basically be a private tour with my own guide and sherpa…It’ll be 14 days on the mountain and I leave friday morn….more on this as the trek begins….

It’s That Time Again……..April 2, 2012

Wow, its seems like ages since I last dropped an entry in here…..Ha, probably cause I really haven’t gone anywhere since South America last fall (small jaunts to Vegas and Palm Springs don’t count cause nobody wants to hear about how much money I lose and how bad my golf game is….). Well, that’s about to end… the time has come again for another little adventure…destination, Kathmandu in Nepal and a trek to Everest Base Camp with a little Vietnam thrown in “just because” ( I love that phrase “just because”, it covers everything and you don’t really need to explain it)….the plan is 3 The properties and working modules of Generic Zyban has been levitra free samples proved in a recent study by Dr. It operates by creating a vacuuming impact viagra in india that brings bloodstream into your erectile organ. On a side note, the name of this blog is “Two Wheels to Nowhere” and it seems like it’s been “Two Wings to Nowhere”….don’t think I haven’t noticed!!! Well that’s gonna be remedied this May/June when I finally hop on the bike again and depart on my trip to Alaska (hopefully with some riding partners too)….so game on!!!! back to the blog!!!!
