Slight Detour…..

So, for those of you who know me…or at least heard me babble away for a little while, you would know that one of my “goals” was to ride up to Prudhoe Bay in Alaska (northernmost town in North America accessible by road)….Well, I planned on and was pretty much ready to leave right after the Labour Day long weekend… after spending the long weekend in Victoria (a little golf trip), I was gonna take a couple of days to pack up, then hit the road north…..it didn’t quite work out that way…..for the previous few months, I had been casually searching for a new motorcycle…BMW F800GS…as you may or may not know, there are not a lot of these bikes for sale and they are relatively hard to find, at any given time, there may only be half a dozen for sale throughout North America (usually on the east coast). Keeping my eye on Ebay, Craigslist, Kijji and other Internet classifieds , I was always on the “look out” for any F800’s in Canada or the US but there just wasn’t a whole lot out there…I even started checking out Ebay UK thinking there may be more over there….no luck.

The Labour Day weekend I was going with a few buddies to Victoria for a couple of rounds of golf and a little bit of debauchery in the city of Vic!!! We have been doing this trip for the last few years and has now become sort of a tradition, so if you’re looking to golf on the Labour Day weekend, you’ll know where we could meet….anyhow, the Wednesday before the weekend, while doing my usual online search for BMW’s, I came across Island BMW’s (Victoria BMW dealer) website that listed a 2009 F800GS with 7800km still under warranty!! To make a long story short, I gave them a call, we worked out a price, dropped a deposit and arranged to pick up the bike the following Saturday…..It worked out perfect!! I was already going to Victoria, I would pick up the bike before our round of golf on Saturday and ride the bike home on Sunday…It was just that easy!!!

My New Baby!!! It took a little searching, but I finally found one

This thing is great!!!! The KLR is still the best “value for dollar” adventure bike out there but it still has it’s limitations….The BMW is just a better more advanced overall bike, better power, better ride and better accessories. Of course, the bike choice for Alaska would be the BMW, but to get it ready for the trip, I would still need to add a few things….crash bars, new seat, windscreen etc…so back online and ordering up all the needed parts. By this time, we are looking at middle to end of September before all the parts arrive and get installed…checking the weather patterns for Alaska, Yukon and NWT for that time of year, it didn’t look good…although though the daytime highs looked ok, it was the evening lows (below freezing) and unpredictability that really had me worried…the decision was made to postpone Alaska (believe me, I will get up there some time) until better weather.
