Elephants and Tigers….

Chiang Mai is in northern Thailand nestled in the hills and jungle…this makes for a perfect spot for adventure tourism and something that I would of never expected in Thailand. But lo and behold, there are many outfits offering mountain biking, whitewater rafting, jungle treks, bungee jumpingĀ (you’d think I was back in BC) and last but not least, animal tours……there are several elephant camps in the area and since I probably wouldn’tĀ get this chance again, I signed up for an elephant safari tour day trip for a 1000 baht, which is about $32 cdn…quit reasonable I thought for a day trip, lunch and transportation…I was to be picked up from my hotel at 8:30am, the transport was 45 minutes late…hmmm, not a good start, but fortunately that was the only hiccup in the day….The camp was about an hour outside of Chiang Mai and upon arriving, I was quite impressed….the mandatory souvenir shop, a full service restaurant/bar and elephants wandering all over the place, there were so many wandering around that you had to be careful not to get “run over” by one of them….

Just cruzin through he jungle......

This guy has more talent than I do.....

The tour also included a raft ride down the river on this little bamboo raft…not too much to speak of, just floatin down a muddy river for 45 minutes, so no pics….In the afternoon, we had a little extra time, so the tour guide gave a few options to see… snake ranch, monkey park or tiger kingdom…well, not that interested in snakes, seen monkeys before, so that left tiger kingdom!!! Wasn’t too sure what to expect, but it turned out out to be a bunch of tigers that you could “play” with….I was hoping that we might get to wrestle with them, but play is in quotations for a reason, you actually just get to pet and get some pics taken with them…I guess hoping to wrestle with them was asking for a little too much!! Anyhow, it was still pretty cool to get up close and pet them cause I probably won’t be doing that again….

Just posing for the camera

Who the hell is this pesky tourist bothering my sleep time????

I think he likes his belly scratched....

The park had several tigers, both adults and babies all caged up……not sure how humane this whole operation was cause it just seemed like the tigers were caged up in small pens with a constant barrage of people harrassing them….but who am I to say anything??? I was the one paying to see this…..Anyhow, enough with the moral dilemma, I think zip lining through the jungle is next on the agenda….
