I have heard so much about this big dead body of water with just as big of a stench just about an hour east of La quinta….the Salton Sea…well let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint. Apparently the Salton Sea was created back in the early 1900’s when the Colorado river flooded and water filled this “salton sink” and because of the lack of water egress, the Salton Sea was eventually formed. This body of water soon became a tourist attraction and was quite a recreation hotspot…why not? a huge body of water in the middel of the desert!!! But because of the aformentioned lack of water egress, the salinity of the water climbed to the point where pretty much nothing could live in it….soon the popularity of the Salton Sea died off (along with everything else), people left and the place started to look like a ghost town…which leads us to today, there are a few locals still living around, but not many, dilapidated buidings and fish skeletons all over the shore…oh yeah… and that nice stench in the air….

Something else in the area as well is Salvation Mountain…it’s definitely something to see and a little hard to describe…this crazy old guy built this “mountain” outta hay and other stuff, then painted it all up…I think it is an ongoing project and he is adding to it when he can and he has his own website now
