Day 5 La Quinta California….

I made it!!! It’s sunny and windy with temps in the high 80’s and 90’s… I am going to relax a bit here, do a little maintenance on my bike and maybe get a few rounds of golf in ( I actually packed my golf shoes)….I also plan on getting some day trips to the surrounding area…I’ll post as interesting things come up, but there probably won’t be much till I start my return trip in a week or so…….now I think it’s time to take a nap by the pool!!!

Parked in the garage for a little break!!

Day 4 Monterey to La Quinta…..

Today is a day of putting on miles…the plan was to leave Monterey and make it to La Quinta in time for the 4:30 start of the Canucks game…not too much going on today except for the fact that I almost ran outta gas in the middle of nowhere (isn’t that the name of this Blog??) and was almost blown off the hwy by gusting winds…..Couple of things I have learned so far on this trip, gas mileage severely drops travelling above 55 mph…Because this was just a day of getting from point A to point B as soon as possible, I hopped on the 101 and started cruising around 70 mph (that’s the speed limit). When I reached the turnoff to go from Hwy 101 to I5, there was a sign that said “next service 50 miles”, I looked at my odometer and figured I had at least 70 miles before I even needed to think about gas….hmmm, I was wrong, I had to go to reserve after about 20 miles…..I really didn’t know how far I could go on reserve, but I had heard that it was good for about 20 miles on a KLR…Well you don’t have to be a mathematician to know that the numbers don’t work…now the wheels are turning (in my head)…do I continue on and try and make it? Do I turn around? I have an extra litre of spare gas that I carry, so that would get me a few more miles so I decided to continue on…dropped my speed down 55 mph and kept my fingers crossed…of course, it started to rain as well, great!!! All I could think about was how this was going to really screw up my time line if I have to hitch hike to a gas station…..Well as you already know (from the beginning of this post I mentioned that I “almost” ran outta gas), after about 30 miles on reserve  I saw the big Texaco Star on the horizon and if I did run out now, at least I wouldn’t have that far to walk…whew!!!

Second thing I learned so far…..I hate riding in gusty winds!!!!! I don’t know if it’s because the KLR is relatively tall and was a little top heavey, but I was getting tossed around like a rag doll just outside of Palm Springs…granted it was very gusty and the semis were having as much fun as I was, it still was a pain…..rain, cold, heat, no problem…gusty winds, yeck!!!

Third thing I learned so far….don’t cheap out on tires!!!!! I bought some shinko 244’s (street legal knobby) which came to under $100 for the front and back…well, take a look at the pic below….
