Day 24 Santa Rosa to Monterey

It’s Sunday morning, a little overcast with a slight drizzle in the air. It had rained pretty hard last nite and the bikes are drenched….James made it into Santa Rosa early last nite just in time for dinner, so he quickly unpacked and off we went to Willie Bird’s restaurant….If any of you watch Diners, Drive In’s and Dives (food network chanel), this place was featured in one of the episodes. Willie raises his own turkeys and serves them in his restaurant (sells them separately too), so guess what the specialty was there??? You guessed it ….TURKEY….. it is served all sorts of ways, but their main dish is the old school turkey dinner….that’s what James and I went for, and to tell you the truth, it was just ok…I guess cause it was on the show, my expectations were high, but not met….James had the same thoughts, anyhow it wasn’t too expensensive and the food was still decent….

James and me Sunday morn getting ready to leave for Monterey...a little rainy!!!

Off to Monterey on hwy 101 through San Fran and over the Golden Gate bridge…I had come up the same way to get to Santa Rosa so I would be doubling back a bit but with the weather around us not looking too good, we decided to head south for warmer skies and it’s always nice to ride the coast….

Once over the bridge, we saw a sign for Lombard street and decided to veer off…we ended up on Lombard St., but not exactly sure where to go so we pulled over in “Presidio” and started talking with this local dude walking by. He pointed us in the right direction ( I think it was actually a left) and off we went go find the famous “crooked” Lombard St.

As you can see, we found the famous “Lombard St.” and it was packed….people, cameras, cars all over the place looking for that photo…along with our pics, I think we got in on a few of some others as well…With time running out ( wanted to get to Monterey in time for the Canucks game at 5pm), we took a spin around the Bay to Baker Beach and back onto hwy 1, of course, when you are trying to make time, we hit traffic!!! where are all these people going???

We actually made good time and got to Monterey in plenty of time to catch the game….YEAY Canucks!!!!! Found a bar to watch the game (There were actually a few other Vancouver fans in the bar with us) and hunkered down with some beers, wings and nachos…..

Day 23 Fresno CA to Santa Rosa CA

After a horrible nite at the local Fresno Motel 6 (I think there were local dealers next store), I quickly packed up all my things, loaded up the bike and got the heck outta there….I had talked to James and we decided that we were gonna meet up in Santa Rosa, kinda the midway point between us….north to hwy 152, then west towards the west coast. I decided to take CA 1 (coast hwy) to Santa Rosa because I had plenty of time to get there and didn’t wanna just do the Interstates to get there….passed through Gilroy Ca which just happens to nicknamed “the world’s garlic capital”…..apparently they process the most garlic than any other place in the world!!!….I swear you could smell it in the air…from there, straight on to the coast through Santa Cruz.

Heading north on the coast hwy took me into San Fransisco and the Golden Gate Bridge!! I know I have been over the bridge in the past, but I didn’t remember how big this dam thing is!!! They gotta replace the Lions Gate Bridge (in Vancouver) with one of these babies!!! (then I might even think of moving to North Van)…did the touristy thing with more one handed moving pics and off to Santa Rosa to meet up with James…..

Day 22 Time to get outta Vegas…..

Friday morning and feeling pretty good…took it easy last nite (on the drinks) and I am reaping the benefits this morn….I can’t think of anything worse than having to wear a helmut with a massive hangover…Today I start to meet up with my bro in-law who has already left Vancouver and making his way south, so I decided to make my way to California, then head north….so I headed west from Vegas, through the Mojave Desert, then up through Bakersfield and finishing in Fresno…Just a side note: I’m spending the nite at a Motel 6 just off the hwy in Fresno and although I haven’t stayed at a lot of Motel 6’s ( two others) they have all been the same….complete DUMPS!!!! I don’t even ED patients usually get this sexual disorder due to the improper balance of the tadalafil prices above enzymes, ED occurs. Day 19 Cedar city to Lake Mead and Las Vegas

Cedar City…..dam cold, I think it was about 35F this morning, loaded up the bike, was ready to leave….battery dead….hmmmmm, guess it doesn’t like the cold weather (note to self, get a new battery). I was on a slight hill in the parking lot, but it wasn’t big enough to bump start my cold bike, luckily one of the maintenance guys was out and he gave me a push to get it going…I ‘ve had enough of this cold weather…head south!!!! which fortunately was kinda the plan…off to Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam. It was going to be a short day of riding today (about 5 hours) so I could get to the hotel, update my blog and get some gambling in….

Day 18 Cedar City Utah

Ok, Cedar City Utah was not my first choice of stops, but it just happened to work out that way….the clouds were looming this morn  and it had rained a bit last nite. I had planned to head northwest on route 89 to a road called Cottonwood Canyon Rd., this is a backroad in the Glen Canyon National Forest which ends at Cannonville and from there I would pass through Bryce Canyon onto Cedar City…well, that was the plan…checking out, I mentioned that I was going through Cottonwood Canyon Rd, the girl at the front suddenly had a weird look on her face and said “you’re on a motorcycle???” I told her I was, but it was capable to go off road…well her look changed to a sarcastic grin and said that it definitey wasn’t a good idea to go through that road with anything but a hardcore 4wd machine, especially after it had just rained…well that threw my plans for a loop…off to plan B. I had heard about a ride through Mexican Hat (yup, that’s a name of a town) and around the north side of  Glen Canyon Park, then south down the west side to Bryce Canyon. I mapped it out on Google and it showed about a 6hr trip plus two hours to get to Mexican Hat (starting point) and 2 hrs from Bryce Canyon to Cedar City, so basically about 10hrs riding plus stops…checked out, I started heading east for plan B….just out of Page, those dam winds started up again!! I don’t know if it is just because of the time of year (springtime??) or if it was alway like that year round but curse those winds…if you ever need an upper body workout, just ride a motorcycle through those kinda crosswinds and your abs, arms and neck will get tested….luckily it only lasted till Mexican Hat (2 hrs later), then it was smooth sailing (sort of)…I gotta tell you that over this ride I experienced all four seasons, started in the desert with the heat of the summer, started climbing in elevation and got the rains of spring, the hail of fall started with the thunder clouds above me, then the bitter cold of winter with blowing snow in Bryce Canyon…..

to tell ya the truth, not sure where this was....but it looked good...

It's hard to tell, but it is snowing here...and dam cold!!!! took this pic while riding with one hand, camera in the other...probably not the smartest thing to do when snowing, but i have never been known to be smartest guy....

Once again, I have a lot more pics and if ya wanna see’em, bring over a few cases of beer (and maybe some vodka) and we’re good to go……The snow thing was what bothered me the most…who wudda thot???…but it is high in elevation and the locals said although it’s not normal, it does happen…oh well, I made it through without crashing (I actually had a jeep following me, so if I did dump, hopefully they would help me pick it up)….ended the day at Cedar City and hunkered down with a pizza at the Best Western (took me a while to find that cause of the GPS was messing up on me again and sent me 10 miles too far…), it was a long day, but the ride was well worth it and I would definitely do it again ( but maybe in the middle of summer).

Day 17 Grand Canyon and Page Arizona

Woke up early this morn and I was planning on getting in two stops today, hit the Grand Canyon, then head northeast to Page where Antelope Canyon is…..so off we go, head west on I40 to route 64 and head north, it’s pretty simple, but not for my GPS. That dam thing must have some old maps or needs a firmware upgrade or something cause this thing was taking me all over Flagstaff…fed up, I finally just started following the road signs and voila!!! I was in the visitor center parking lot….sometimes it just might be better to go “old school” once in a while. So I hit the visitor center, used the “can”, went out to the lookout, took a few pics, took a few pics for some other tourists there and then back on the bike…I was originally going to go for a little hike part way down the Rim trail, but there really wasn’t anywhere to change up and the thought of getting geared up after hiking didn’t sound too appealing (yeah, I know, some may call that a wimpy excuse but i think I’m gettin a little too old for that kinda stuff)….

It really is impressive and pictures cannot really capture the magnitude of this “wonder of the world”…at least not my pictures (maybe I shud take a photo class when i get back??). Anyhow, back on the bike and off to Page where I’m gonna spend the nite and go see Antelope Canyon (on recommendation from a friend of mine)….remember earlier on I mentioned that I absolutely hated riding in gusty winds, well the ride to Page musta been the windiest place I have ever been to…I not sure how fast the winds were blowing, but let me put it this way, when stopped to gas up, my bike almost blew over off the stand…apparently, this is normal for that area….I felt really bad for those guys pulling those huge 5th wheels. But none the less, I made it to Page in such good time that I was too early for check in, so in talking with the front desk girl, I found out I could get in on a tour of Antelope Canyon that afternoon (the only way to see the upper Antelope Canyon is with a guide ), I was actually planning to go the next morning, but hey, I had time to kill… the shuttle bus ( or shud I say pickup with seats in the bed) showed up and off we go. If you have never heard of Antelope ( I didn’t) you probably have seen photos of it, this place is know worldwide for its “slot”canyons and has been professionally photographed numerous times…..take a look at mine

These are only a few of the pics I took…I must have hundreds!!! If you wanna see more you are gonna have to bring a case of beer over (maybe 2) and I can show you all of them….years ago, there was a flash flood and several people actually died in the canyon which is one of the reasons why to see the upper canyon, you must go with a guide…I was glad that I went that afternoon cause guess what??? It was raining the next day and the canyon was closed…hah!! chalk one up to fate!!! If you are ever travelling northern Arizona, this place is a must see!!! I would even pass the Grand Canyon to see this if you could only do one…..so there you go, two thumbs up for Antelope!!!!

Day 16 Going to Flagstaff Arizona

Cleaned up the house and packed everything back on the bike…today is going to be a mileage day to Flagstaff passing through Prescott and Sedona. The first thing I noticed passing into Arizona was that gas was 50 cents/gallon cheaper than in Cali, second thing was that I thought I wandered into the land of RV parks….everywhere you looked, there were RV parks, even in the middle of  nowhere in the Arizona desert, not exactly the best locations but they seemed to be full, I guess people will go anywhere to escape the bitter winter cold…….I not sure if there was some kinda holiday this weekend, but it seemed like every little small town I passed through had some kinda festival going on…. lotsa balloons, people and flea markets on small town main street today, I was trying to make some time to flagstaff so I waved a lot and motored on through….. The land of the red rock , Sedona, was next before I hit Flagstaff. Sedona sure has changed since the last time I was there (over 15 years ago), much more built up and definitely more touristy…guess that what happens when a place gets popular. One thing that didn’t change was the stunning scenery and the beautiful red rock that Sedona is famous for. I tried to drive through town and take hwy 89A to Flagstaff (supposed to be a nice scenic motorcycle ride), but the main road going into town was backed up for miles and not moving…after sitting in line for a while (and getting real hot in the sun), I made the decision to turn back to I17 and take that to Flagstaff, not the most interestings but beat sitting in a traffic jam…..

Day 15 Salton Sea

I have heard so much about this big dead body of water with just as big of a stench just about an hour east of La quinta….the Salton Sea…well let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint. Apparently the Salton Sea was created back in the early 1900’s when the Colorado river flooded and water filled this “salton sink” and because of the lack of water egress, the Salton Sea was eventually formed. This body of water soon became a tourist attraction and was quite a recreation hotspot…why not? a huge body of water in the middel of the desert!!! But because of the aformentioned lack of water egress, the salinity of the water climbed to the point where pretty much nothing could live in it….soon the popularity of the Salton Sea died off (along with everything else), people left and the place started to look like a ghost town…which leads us to today, there are a few locals still living around, but not many, dilapidated buidings and fish skeletons all over the shore…oh yeah… and that nice stench in the air….

Something else in the area as well is Salvation Mountain…it’s definitely something to see and a little hard to describe…this crazy old guy built this “mountain” outta hay and other stuff, then painted it all up…I think it is an ongoing project and he is adding to it when he can and he has his own website now http://www.salvationmountain.us

Day 14 Joshua Tree National Park

Now that I got my new tires installed and my bike ready to go, I decided to take a day trip to Joshua Tree National Park which is only about an hour from La Quinta. I didn’t want to do the regular paved tour through the park, so I searched the internet and had found that there are a lot of  “4 wd” roads in the park as well. So with GPS in hand (or should I say on bike), I headed out towards the south end of the park looking for Berdoo Canyon Rd….head east on hwy 10 through Indio to Dillon Road exit, head north on Dillon for a few miles to Berdoo Canyon Rd, turn right onto Berdoo Canyon and away you go…..

Berdoo Canyon Road connects onto Geology Tour Road and then connects to the main parkway. It’s made up of rocky technical sections, loosen sand and hardpack…so you kinda getb a little of everything. I’m not used to riding in too much sand, so it was a little tricky riding through these parts with the bike snaking around underneath me, I almost dumped the bike several times on some technical rocky areas (I sure wish I had lower gearing) but managed to keep upright and relatively scratch free….

After Berdoo, I headed south on the main parkway to another called “Old Dale Road” which headed north passing by some old mines…..

Old Dale started out as a hard packed dirt road almost two lanes wide, I’m guessing designed for “regular vehicles”…but after about 15 miles, the road progressively gets worse and worse until nothing but a hard core rock crawler could pass…..I probably got about 3/4 of the way through but then hit a section that was just too much for the loaded down KLR ( and me as well)….so I made the decision to turn around and back track….

All in all, I put about 250 miles on with about 120 of those in the dirt trails….it was hot and I was getting tired wrestling my 400 lb bike through sand and rocks…..time to head back to La Quinta!!!!
