Top of the World…Highway that is….

It’s a little chilly but the overnight rain has stopped and it looks like it’s gonna hold off for the rest of the day.

The Top of the World Highway is a 127-kilometre (79 mi) long highway, beginning at a junction with the Taylor Highway near Jack Wade, Alaska traveling east to the end the ferry terminal in West Dawson, on the western banks of the Yukon River. The highway has been in existence since at least 1955 and is only open during the summer months. The entire portion of the highway in Yukon is also known as Yukon Highway 9 and the Alaska portion is referred to it as Top of the World Highway.

The highway gets it’s name because along much of its length, it skirts the crest of the hills, giving looks down on the valleys. It is also one of the most northerly highways in the world at those latitudes. Two nearby, farther north highways are the Dempster and the Dalton Highways. It is not particularly safe in winter, even for snowmobile use, due to the lack of trees for shelter.

Along the way to Dawson City I came across a small town called “Chicken”… Chicken is a community founded on gold mining and is one of the few surviving gold rush towns in Alaska. The population was seven at the 2010 Census, but, usually year round, there are 17 inhabitants…that’s what I call small!!!

The Top of North America!!

Spent the night in Fairbanks and next morning the ride to deadhorse (Prudhoe Bay) began….

If you ever watched “Ice Road Truckers” on TV, this is one of the roads that they travel over. The James W. Dalton Highway, usually referred to as the Dalton Highway (and signed as Alaska Route 11) is a 414-mile road in Alaska. It begins at the Elliott Highway, north of Fairbanks, and ends at Deadhorse near the Arctic Ocean and the Prudhoe Bay oil fields. Once called the North Slope Haul Road, it was built as a supply road to support the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System in 1974.The main purpose of this highway was for the construction of the Trans Alaska Pipeline and supply the oil fields in Prudhoe Bay.

Starting from Fairbanks, one way trip to Deadhorse is about 500 miles and I plan to ride it in two days with one stop in Coldfoot which is about the half way mark. I total I will spend four days roundtrip back to Fairbanks with two nights in Coldfoot (1 night way up, 1 night way down) and one night in Deadhorse. The road itself is about 30% paved and 70% gravel/dirt (and mud when it rains) and at times can be quite hazardous for small vehicles and motorcycles….I guess that’s part of the appeal, as well as the fact that it is the farthest north you can drive in North America…

I’m making good time and I should be in Tok Alaska the next day…

Direction…. Due North!!!

All packed and ready to go, I pulled out of my underground and with PG (Prince George) punched into the GPS I was off…It’s been a few years coming, but I was finally on my way to see Alaska.

Away I go!!!! The adventure begins….

I left Vancouver a few days ago and decided to head north through the Fraser Canyon towards Prince George. The sun was out, it was warm and not too much traffic… a perfect way to start a road trip!!

It was about 8hrs to PG and I just sat back and got used to long riding days again. Left the next morning and decided to head towards the southern part of Alaska and a little town called Hyder.  Hyder has a population of approx. 70 and is land locked by BC (same as Point Roberts), the only way to get to Hyder  (other than by boat) is through Stewart, BC which is located right on the Canadian side of the border with a population of about 300…Needless to say, these are both very small towns but the ride in offers some spectacular scenery and some close up shots of the Bear glacier.
